A recurring theme in Ptolemy Mann’s work for many years has been a fascination with the transition from one colour to another through the dye technique known as IKAT. Well established as a textile artist since her RCA graduation in 1997 Mann has also designed bespoke rugs and textiles exploring this dynamic. Colour theory inspired designs reminiscent of the Bauhaus school where colours become three dimensional and vibrate next to one another. She now offers a bespoke textile design service and has a portfolio of vibrant geometric designs available for licensing. All these designs have her distinct ‘Ikat’ trade mark, inspired by her existing one-off art works which digital print technology, for the first time, is able to capture; a contemporary take on an enduring textile icon that will last well into the future.

Mann has now designed a series of exclusive flatweaves for Christopher Farr which form a new collection alongside a digitally printed linen furnishing fabric called ADRAS, available in four colourways.

Clients include: London Transport, Christopher Farr, NHS, Hilton Hotel group, Cunard, KPMG, Savills, Derwent London, Building Better Health, Land Securities Swankye Hayden Connell Architects and Stanton Williams Architects. Ptolemy Mann shows at Contemporary Applied Arts, is a regular exhibitor at the Chelsea Craft Fair, ORIGIN, 100% Design, SOFA New York and Chicago and is a selected maker on the Crafts council register. She also writes regularly for the textile magazine SELVEDGE.

“Ptolemy Mann delivers a very strong statement that makes no apologies”
Christopher Farr

“Ptolemy’s great talent is in seeing, in situ, a solution which can ‘project’ outwards from the surface planes on which her work hangs. She can take the viewer into an unexpected area of appreciation by the exact balance, colour and material power of her creation. It is her ability to take the brief from start to completed installation, not missing or omitting a single step on the way herself, which endows her work with such calm and total integrity giving the installation enormous architectonic quality”.
Graham Mortimer - Architect

“Ptolemy Mann’s innovative dyeing skills, her appreciation of colour theory, the deep interest she has in architecture, work with her “purely instinctive” and Matisse-like response to the “expressive aspect of colour” in the creation of textiles which embody and express her dedicated aspiration, the achievement of “minimalism in colour”.
