Ptolemy Mann has been working from her studio in London since graduation from Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art in 1997. Mann has established herself as the unique creator of one-off, woven, architectural artworks.
Various fibres are hand dyed in her signature Ikat technique and hand woven on an upright ‘Dobby’ loom. These colourfield artworks are unique and unexpected. Once stretched over frames of various depths; large or small scale, they take on an architectural and chromatically minimal stance. Mann’s textiles have been placed within public, corporate and domestic spaces throughout the UK and abroad.
An important aspect of her work has been to create textile installations in direct response to the architecture surrounding them. Colour saturated ‘experiential’ environments that show her woven textiles in a dynamic contemporary way. Recent work has become floor based and her sculptural ‘Monoliths’ are beautifully reminiscent of American abstract expressionism.
Clients include: Hilton Hotel group, GlaxoSmithKline, The Open University, Cunard, KPMG, Land Securities, Sunlife of Canada, NHS, Norwegian Cruise, Hampshire County Council, Savills and numerous private clients.
“The singing stripe of her precise but subtle textile pieces confirm her as a powerful and pleasing colourfield artist whose medium just happens to be the supremely disciplined one of weaving. It is a rare and thrilling conjunction.”

“Ptolemy Mann’s innovative dyeing skills, her appreciation of colour theory, the deep interest she has in architecture, work with her “purely instinctive” and Matisse-like response to the “expressive aspect of colour” in the creation of textiles which embody and express her dedicated aspiration, the achievement of “minimalism in colour”.
